High-rise hotels and office towers in central Jakarta

Where to Stay in Jakarta

In Jakarta, location is not a nicety — it is the difference between a ten-minute hop and an hour in traffic.

Choose your area before you choose your hotel. Jakarta is enormous and its traffic is slow, so the right base is the one closest to what you plan to do — ideally within walking distance of an MRT or TransJakarta station.

Thamrin and Menteng put you in the middle, between the monuments and the malls. SCBD and Senayan are the modern business and nightlife district. Kota Tua and the north suit travellers who want the old town on the doorstep. And the airport hotels exist for one reason: flights at dawn.

Jakarta is good value for upscale hotels by international standards. Rates below are Trip.com’s indicative starting prices per night in US dollars and change constantly with dates and demand — every card links out for live availability. Guest scores and review counts are Trip.com’s own.

Which area is right for you?

Base Good for Less good for From
Thamrin & Menteng First visits, sightseeing, malls, MRT and airport-train access Quiet streets; rock-bottom prices US$30
SCBD & Senayan Restaurants, nightlife, business, luxury hotels Reaching Kota Tua quickly US$90
Kota Tua & north Old-town atmosphere, Glodok food, Ancol, budget stays Evening dining choice; MRT access US$5
Airport Early flights, late arrivals, layovers Seeing the city US$33

How to choose

  • First visit, two or three nights? Thamrin or Menteng, near Bundaran HI or Dukuh Atas stations.
  • Here for food and nightlife? SCBD, Senopati or Senayan.
  • History lover or on a budget? Kota Tua — but plan to eat early or take a car to dinner.
  • With children? A central hotel with a pool, or Ancol if the theme parks are the point.
  • Flight before 8 am? Sleep at the airport. Morning traffic towards Tangerang is not worth the gamble.

Booking tips

  • Check the walking distance to the nearest MRT or TransJakarta station, not just the distance on the map.
  • Weekend rates in business districts are often lower than weekday rates.
  • Around Lebaran and long weekends, city hotels can be surprisingly cheap while Bandung and Puncak fill up.
  • Most upscale hotels include a generous breakfast buffet — worth factoring into the price.

Central for sightseeing; South (SCBD, Senayan, Senopati) for restaurants, bars and business. The MRT links the two in about fifteen minutes.
