Bandung, capital of West Java, sits on a plateau about 700 metres above sea level, ringed by volcanoes and roughly 150 km south-east of Jakarta. The Dutch developed it as a cool-climate garden city, and its centre still has fine art deco buildings; today it is a university town known for cafés, fashion outlets and weekend crowds from the capital.
What changed everything is Whoosh, Southeast Asia’s first high-speed railway, which opened in October 2023. Trains running at up to 350 km/h cover the distance from Halim station in East Jakarta to Padalarang in around 30 minutes and to Tegalluar in about 45, replacing a three-hour drive.
Top things to do at Bandung by Whoosh
Peer into a volcano
Tangkuban Perahu, north of the city near Lembang, is a volcano whose main crater you can reach by road and view from the rim. South of Bandung, near Ciwidey, Kawah Putih is a pale turquoise crater lake ringed by white rock. Both can be closed at short notice because of volcanic gas.
Walk among tea plantations and soak in hot springs
The hills around Lembang, Subang and Ciwidey are carpeted with tea. Day tours usually add a hot-spring stop and a village lunch — the format of the most popular day trip from Jakarta.
See colonial Bandung
In town, look for Gedung Sate, the 1920s government building named for the skewer-like ornament on its roof; Jalan Braga, the old European shopping street; and Gedung Merdeka on Jalan Asia Afrika, where the 1955 Asian–African Conference was held and which now has a museum.
Eat and shop
Bandung is proud of its Sundanese cooking and snacks — batagor, siomay, mie kocok — and of its factory outlets and independent clothing labels.

How to get to Bandung by Whoosh
- By Whoosh: trains leave from Halim station in East Jakarta, reached by LRT Jabodebek (Halim stop) or by taxi. For the city centre, get off at Padalarang and take the connecting feeder train to Bandung station; Tegalluar is the terminus on the eastern side. Buy tickets in the Whoosh app, online or at the station, and bring your passport.
- By conventional train: scenic services from Gambir take around three hours.
- By road: two and a half to three hours by toll road in light traffic; far longer on Friday evenings and weekends.
- With a tour: the craters and plantations are spread out well beyond the city, so a tour with a vehicle — some using Whoosh for one or both legs — saves a great deal of organising.
Insider tips
- Go on a weekday. On weekends Bandung’s roads are clogged with visitors from Jakarta.
- It is noticeably cooler than the capital, and chilly at the craters — bring a light jacket.
- Fares on Whoosh vary by time and class; check current prices and book ahead for weekends.
- Sulphur fumes at the craters can be strong. People with respiratory conditions should take care, and visits are sometimes time-limited.
- A door-to-door day trip by road can run to 14 hours. If that sounds exhausting, stay a night.
