Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) — “Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park” — opened in 1975 in East Jakarta. Its idea is simple and rather wonderful: around a lake dotted with islands in the shape of the Indonesian archipelago, each province has a pavilion built as a full-size example of its traditional architecture, from Minangkabau horn-roofed houses to Toraja tongkonan and Papuan honai.
The park covers roughly 150 hectares and also contains museums, houses of worship for each recognised religion, gardens, a bird park and theatres. A major renovation completed in 2023 removed most motor traffic from the interior, added walking and cycling paths and refreshed many buildings.
Top things to do at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah
Tour the provincial pavilions
Pick a handful rather than trying to see them all. The West Sumatra, Toraja (South Sulawesi), Bali, Central Java and Papua pavilions are among the most striking. Many contain costumes, crafts and models, and at weekends some host dance and music.
Ride the cable car
The gondola crosses the park above the archipelago lake, the one place you can see the “map” of Indonesia laid out in miniature.
Visit a museum or two
The park has more than a dozen. The Indonesia Museum, in Balinese style, gives a good overview of the country’s cultures; others cover transport, stamps, insects and more.
Get around by shuttle or bicycle
Private vehicles park at the edge. Inside, use the electric shuttle buses, rent a bicycle or scooter, or walk between clusters. The site is large — plan for half a day at least.
